Reporting back on uprezing with Compressor
This is for Walter and Shane, or anyone else. A couple of weeks ago Shane posted a link to some Compressor droplets which are great. My query at the time regarded using anamorphic DV footage in place of regular DV.
So yesterday I finally got around to doing some tests. In the process I found that my Panasonic anamorphic converter is less than perfect on close-ups, I shot my cat CU and the original footage was quite soft. So I tried using my Optex converter which sucks for wide shots but works great on CUs.
Anyways, the workflow I tried worked great for both 720 and 1080 upconverts, I rendered out a QT movie from FCP at 864×480 (I put Graeme’s film look filter on first) and in Compressor no cropping was needed. I was blown away by the resulting files, just amazing.
Downside, a 15 second clip took about an hour and a half to render, but I think this is still faster than Instant HD and ReSizer, please chime in if I’m wrong. Wouldn’t it be great if some more acceleration could be built into Compressor? I’m going to continue to tinker with this, but I am really encouraged by the first results.
BTW working on a G5 2gig PC with 10.4.8 and 4.5 gigs of RAM, rendering to a SATA RAID.

My only question is whether the film look Natress filter was fully rendered before the uprez. If you EXPORT a QT of the final sequence and then place that QT into compressor does it still take the same amount of time to render?
Compressor might be doing the filter calculation as well.
Try a test without the Natress FX and see if it is any faster.
THose are very HQ upconverters and are using the best (slowest) algorythms. It’s the old Cheap fast good deal, hard to get them all in one package. You are right, the results are stunning.

I was refereing to the droplets available for compressor that are available on Shane’s website. They are droplets intended for High Quality Upconversion from DV source to 720P or 1080 files.

Yes, I rendered the film filter and output a self-contained movie for Compressor. I used Shane’s droplets to scope out all the settings, including the best rather than slower. I totally agree with you about good, fast and cheap, I was just daydreaming about something faster, but yes, it is amazing what you can do.
I just go my cat to cooperate for some new closups expect brilliant results.

Re-read your post, I don’t think the filter (Nattress) made a difference, ’cause I did one earlier in the day without it, and it took about the same amount of time.

And, yes Chris, I will try out Shanes droplets for sure, especially as I am installing my new Kona LH and Pany 42″ monitor as we speak. I’m sure they will come in quite handy.

Must be an install kinda day, I just replaced my 19″ bin monitor with a 22″ widescreen, has HDMI-in to boot. Talk about real estate! Woohoo!
