FCP 4.5 & 5.1.2
Posted by Fcpinnfla on December 28, 2006 at 6:17 pmHi all.
I was working on a friend’s 4.5 system the other day and when I went to export a sequence using Quicktime Converison, I noticed that it had the option to export as a .wmv When was this option dropped in the newer versions??? It would have saved me tons of time making .wmv for clients.
Thanks.

December 28, 2006 at 6:20 pmYour friend probably had Flip4mac installed. This very worthwhile plugin give Quicktime wmv capabilities. You simple can export to wmv with FCP, compressor as you wish.
It is worth every single penny.

December 28, 2006 at 6:50 pmAND…to save you the follow-up question:
The option you saw ALSO appears as a demo even if your friend had just installed the free Flip4Mac player. (Not the paid exporter.) So if you ask him and he doesn’t remember paying for anything it means that the WMV export option you saw will only export 30 seconds of video. When you pay for the real version it unlocks that.

December 28, 2006 at 9:56 pmI second David’s notion. I think we export WMVs from FCP on an almost continual basis for our clients and without Flip4Mac, the old process of exporting it, transfering it to a Windows workstation and encoding it to WMV over there would have sent us to the grave by now.
The latest version really improves on WMV encoding times as well.
Definitely worth every penny… even a Canadian penny in David’s case!

December 29, 2006 at 3:51 amHeh, I think the African Rand (their form of currancy) is better than the USD. Heck, I think everything is better than the USD at this point! Ahhh, I remember the good old days when a dollar would buy me the equivalent of a 2-bedroom home in other coutries. Oh how I miss the mighty dollar! :-p
Hope all is well with you too, buddy.

December 29, 2006 at 1:34 pmThanks, I wondered why his machine was able to do that! I will purchase FlipforMac today. Kind of off-topic but does anybody use Yousendit.com to send preview videos to clients? It’s free and works great. Thanks again, you guys and gals rock…

December 29, 2006 at 3:05 pmYes,
I have used you send it. It doesn’t stay free all the time, once you get to a certainnumber of sends and a certain file size it becomes a pay deal.
The times I used it it worked great.
Peace and Love 🙂
