OT: Recommend PC software for edit lab
This year I am going to teach editing at a new Community Center, and they are asking for advice on what to put into 8 PCs in my classroom. This could be on the order of iMovie and iDVD, since it is expected that the students will be home hobbyists for the most part. So what would any of you PC folk suggest for them? I would want whatever to be able to do some basic image processing and VERY limited titling, graphics, compositing, enough to do a nice home movie but not expensive or hard to learn.
My alternative to all this is to do our class project with rented equipment and stay on Macs, but I think option one would be better. I just need advice and a quick jump start on whatever they get.

Avid has a free NLE app called Avid FreeDV, available for both MAC and Windows, which you can check out and download at https://www.avid.com/freedv/index.asp . This might be perfect for you, because you could practice on your MAC and then teach the same thing to your students on their PCs, and all without shelling out a single dime.

This is just great, they even have a dozen or so Flash tuts, also free, so I should be able to learn this in no time. BTW Avid have done a crafty job of protecting this, I could not copy the installer for another machine, had to download for each. But it works great and is EXACTLY what I need!

Yes, it is a good way to learn Avid, at least the basics. I spent a lot of yesterday messing with it, biggest problem is unlearning things I take for granted using FCP, which it doesn’t do or does in different ways. It is definitely a LOT less intuitive than FCP, at least I think so, but pretty shrewed of Avid to give something away to win people over. FCP et al must be tough for them, glad I don’t own any of their stock!
