I have HD footage that I need to turn into broadcast ready SD. Any suggestions on the settings? I have been playing around with different compressions and am not happy with my outputs. One of the problems I am having is that it takes the 16:9 footage and turns it into 4:3. Since this is the first thing I have ever done for braodcast I want to make sure that I keep the correct aspect ratio and have the best quality possible. Thank you for any help.

What format of HD are you working with? What format of SD do you need to output to? Do you have a capture card? Do you want to output Full Screen or Letterboxed?

I output DVCPRO HD 16:9 footage to digibeta full screen center extraction (although mainly letterboxed) using an AJA Kona LH card.

The footage is DVCProHD 720/24p. As far as SD goes, I was told they wanted broadcast ready (it is a commercial on spec) and if I gave them HD they would just cut off the sides to make it 4:3. I would like it to be letterbox to see all the action.
I do not have a capture card I am just working with export using either FCP or Compressor. Thank you for your speedy response.

If they want it 4:3, you need to deliver 4:3. That is the client wish. You still have the HD full screen version, so don’t worry about the letterbox.

Now, they want it broadcast ready…but on what format? Betasp? Digibeta?

Well, it all depends on the format they want. You’d export using FCP if you had the capture card. Compressor is used to prep for Web and DVD…and a few other options. But if they want it on betasp, and you don’t have a capture card, then you will have to drop the sequence into a DV sequence, reframe it so that it is 4:3 and render, then output to DV. Then get the DV dubbed to a format they want….unless they will accept DV.

Not your decision to make, 4:3 vs. letterbox. That’s solely the client decision and if they want 4:3 then you must deliver 4:3.

As for outputting, simply drop your HD into an SD timeline and position accordingly. BUT unless they accept DV for broadcast, you’re going to have to output to HD and let someone else do the center cut for you.

If you don’t have a capture card, how did you color correct it? What did you use to view this on an HD monitor?

Choose Compressor for the job… What tape format are you going to deliver? Beta SP could be done thru a DV device like a camera/deck via S video and 2 track audio.

I’d deliver the letterboxed 4:3 myself… The black bars could be used for titles or other graphics too… thus keeping your action, and having a vaild reason for the letter box.

    Thanks for all the input.

They actually will accept an unauthored DVD so that is the media I will be using. They want a seperate aiff audio trck, that’s not a problem. I will try and get some more clearification from them on Monday. I didn’t realize there wasn’t a set format for broadcast.

You asked about the color correction I just ran Firewire out to a camera to a Regular TV. Not the best but I am just making due with what I have right now.

Thank you again I really appreciate everyone’s willingness to contribute on this site.

The HVX camera? You won’t get a good image with that. It won’t get you an HD image to a screen, but a COMPOSITE image. It will look very different than an HD image. Going thru a deck or capture card are your best options.

And a regular TV? If this is something that is going to air you need to at least rent pro equipment. I know you said it was spec, but is there a possibility this will air?

A DVD is hardly “broadcast ready.” If this is on spec, it sounds to me like they’re just looking for a viewing copy. No broadcaster I know of is going to accept a DVD as a program delivery element.

He did say “unauthored DVD” so I’m assuming that means he’ll transfer the Quicktime Movie to a DVD for mastering. So that’s perfectly acceptable to transfer a file that way and then master to tape off another system.

They could be using a video server and this never hits tape… Yeah baby… no more tape. The story of what happened to all those 5 minute betas all duplicators sent to the zllions of TV stations and duplications houses is probably a story of what went into the trash.
