Avid Meridian codec in FCP
A friend gave me a dvd with mov files rendered out from Avid using the Meridian codec 2:1. Upon playback on my laptop, I could hear audio but saw no video – only white. I recently installed the codec from Avid (linked from this site, by the way) and I can now see the mov, although the fields are sometimes present during camera moves and dissolves, and the audio is out of synch. I imported a file into Final Cut Pro, same playback in the source monitor. I placed the clip in the timeline, rendered it, and upon playback I only hear the audio and see no video.
I’ve restarted and same thing. Any ideas?

You can mess this with this all week and never get satisfactory results. Avid’s codecs are proprietary and not necessarily portable.
Your best bet is to ask the source to provide you with standard, open-source material like conventional DV.
Short of that, you can open the clip in QT Pro and export as a new movie to your sequence settings. Could take a long time, be sure sure to do some experiments first before you commit too much time.bogiesan

The Avid Quicktime codec does not work properly in FCP…in fact, FCP may crash at startup if the latest version of the Avid Codec is installed on your system (consider yourself lucky if this does not happen to you)
The Avid Codec was never intended to be an editing codec anyway. Avids, themselves do not play these files directly (you import them and Avid converts them to OMF media). Its intended purpose is as an intermediate format to exchange files with After Effects and other programs.
See if your friend can re-export these in the Animation codec.

Nope, still on the old powerpc. Thanks for the help on this. I actually got another dvd from my friend that plays back fine. But I’ll know not to mess with this meridian codec in the future.
