  Problems Batch Capturing with DSR-11

  I am having a problem with the interface between Final Cut and the Sony DSR 11 Deck. I have been on the phone with Sony all day and they are convinced it’s not a problem with the deck, but rather Final Cut. They had me delete the com.apple.finalcut file and re=open but that didn’t work either although it will for the first clip or so and then it reverts back to the same problem.

  Basically, the Deck doesn’t recognize logged clips — it does’t grab the time code. Instead, it shuttles all the way to the end. I can Capture on the Fly though. When it first started happening we cleaned the heads and that seemed to help for a minute.

  This is a big problem and I can’t figure out what to try next — the Sony man was out of ideas but he doesn’t suggest I send the deck in!

  I’m assuming you’re connected via firewire. Is this FCP 5?

  If so it sounds like you didn’t delete all your preference files. Here’s what you wantto do:

  Quit FCP
  go to your HD and go into Users/Name/Library/preferences
  Trash “com.apple.finalcutpro.plist”
  Go to Final Cut User Data in the same folder
  Trash “Final Cut Pro 5 Prefs”, “Final Cut Pro Obj Cache”, “Final Cut Pro Prof Cache”
  Go back into FCP
  Reset your scratch disks
  Empty Trash AFTER you reenter FCP not before. If you do it before it will jsut recreate the same bad pref files.

  The DSR-11 is one of the worst machines ever manufactured by SONY (I’ve got one).
  Try to capture something with i-movie. If its works with i-movie, then is a problem of FC. If is doesn’t works, then is a problem of the video desk.

  Bull. You may have a lemon, you may have a bad firewire cable, can’t tell from here.

  The DSR11 in my shop has bee a flawless and dependable workhorse for three years and three revs of FCP. Every problem I have ever had between the DSR11 and FCP has been a clear and fixable user error.
  The DSR11 is inexpensive, robust and versatile. You can buy one with complete confidence.
