    hello all-

i have a new 4 drive SATA rack-mounted enclosure. in it are 4 500g seagates. i’m hoping for a 1TB (or what 2-drives get you) with 1TB back-up. however, when going for a RAID 1 setup my disk utility gives me only the 500g option. i’m assuming this is a super-redundency in backup. regardless, to achieve my goal, is this possible:

should i split the four drives into two 1TB RAID 0 setups, then RAID 1 the two 1TB RAID 0 setups?

is this a good idea? or should i just go for a RAID 0 1.8-TB and hope for the best?

i’m working on a documentary in DVCProHD 720p/24 + some small gigs in SD/DV on occasion.

thank you in advance for the input.

    Eric,

Raid 1, otherwise known as mirroring, is a huge waste of space and speed. It slows down reads and writes and simply is not a good investment of your resources. Your SATA drives are very, very robust. Stripe them all together and get the enormous benefit of speed and RT performance that you deserve. If you need to backup anything get a big Firewire drive and use it for that purpose, that’s all Firewire drives are good for once you experience working with a SATA array.
