    Hi All:

I’m editing a documentary on fcp 5.1.2 using a MacPro, La Cie external Firewire Drive, and my sony HVR-A1U as a deck. The logging & capture, and editing have worked great. The problem is I’m unable to print the project to tape. Any ideas on what is wrong?

    Thanks,
    Brian

are you getting an error message or is it just not there when you view the tape?

So is it possible to print to tape in a different format–say, Mini-DV?

    Thanks,
    Brian

[Dave LaRonde] “Bad news, I fear: HDV is ONLY an acquisition format. It is NOT a playback format. So FCP won’t do a Print To Tape using an HDV camera… or an HDV deck, if there’s such a thing.

It’s one of those nasty things they don’t tell you when you buy the camera.”

Sorry Dave, but that’s misinformation. HDV can indeed be rerecorded back to tape using either a camera or deck. It must first go through a seemingly extra process called conform, but its absolutely doable.

You can use print to video, but you cant use edit to tape

    Brian,

Pull the HDV sequence you want to have on tape into the viewer window, chose print to tape, camcorder in VTR mode (set on HDV, of course), then follow fcp’s instructions on the screen. Depending on your Mac and the duration of your sequence, you have to wait a while until FCP has finished rendering (confroming).

    Hi Dave:

Thanks so much for your suggestion. I put the sequence in the viewer window, and put my Sony HVR-A1U in play/edit mode (on HDV, of course) and still no luck. Any other ideas?

    Thanks,
    Brian

Did you then chose print to tape? You didn’t say that above.

    Hi David:

Yes, I tried “Print to tape” with no luck.

    Thanks,
    Brian
