  • MAC PRO 8 core processors??

    Hi,

I’ve just sold my 2,7ghz, 4gb ram, 800gb, G5 (a great piece however with only pci-x slot) and I’m investing in a new editing setup. Does anyone have any idea when are the next wave of MAC PRO with new 8 core processors coming out? Is there any apple convention in the near future, any big apple event that could reveal the launch of their new MAC PRO machines.

I am asking this simply because I like working with apple, but buying new hardware isn’t cheap, and I couldn’t bare buying an existing XEON only to realize a week later that 8 core beast is launching in a couple of days. Mac Pro Xeon was released in august 2006 which makes me think 8 core machines are waiting around a corner (especially since HP has already launched theirs). So if anyone knows anything, please let me know your personal note of advice.

    Best regards to ya all

Information like this is never known until the day Apple announces it. Yes, there is a MacWorld event in January but going on past experience, consumer products are generally the big announcements at that event, like iMacs, iPods and this year it is expected to be the new iPhone.

Mac Pro’s are generally announced in June at the WWDC. The next Mac Pro update will most likely be released via an announcement on the Apple website. Again, only Apple knows when it will be released.

Just to put it into historical context…

Intel released Core 2 Duo chips in July ’06 before the first MacBook with the same chips hit markets in November ’06. Using the same logic (…yes, it’s a stretch — BUT IT’S FUN!!!), we should expect Octo-Core around April.

    NAB 2007 maybe?

The question is, do you need an editing sysem now. No future technology can make you money now. I purchased a Quad G5 (2.5) last year and never looked back. Everything I purchased (except for the Kona 3 cards) is now faster and cheaper but my system was paid for with a single project and it continues to make me money even though it is not the latest and greatest. Just because something new is faster doesn’t make the old obsolete, just a little slower. If fact there are a lot of people making a living with G4 (but it is time for them to upgrae). If it really hurts to see new stuff come out after you buy, wait until the new stuff comes out and buy right away, then you may get 6 months of happiness before the next round rolls out.

If you need a system now, since you said you sold your old one, there is not much history of Apple releasing a new high end system before Christmas, normally Feb or NAB or WDC.

Always the best advice and the other question is do you even need an Intel machine yet? I wish I had not purchased the Mac Pro quite so quickly as things have been slow to get working on the Intel side. My Boris BCC filters just started working this week and After Effects can be flaky under Rosetta.

In hindsight I should have purchased the G5 Quad and waited on the Mac Pro until the second version of the machine. But it does work, it’s earning us money and we’ll move forward from here.

    hi drazen

even though everybody sez buy waht you can now, i’ll give you another reason….

    software

every new hardware release is followed by an immediate software relaese, but usually this release has “issues”, and it can be a couple of months till those issues get resolved

this technology we use and all is flaky enough, why add “public beta” ie initial releases of software to the mix to make your life even harder

if someone told me the 8 core was coming out tomorrow, i still would not even consider it for at least 2 months

    my 3.5 cents

Thats exactly what I did and I’m glad I stuck with it even though I had doubts initially.

    hi everyone,

thanx for the input…well there are two main reasons why I’m switchin…the ability to have pci-e slot (i was stuck with pci-x) and the ability to feed the new mac pro with 4 X 750 gb of internal sata disks, which gives me enough fast and enough space storage for the time beeing for quite a reasonable price (specially when compared to raid fibre and scsi). Judging from your replies it seems that like now it is a good time as any, since 8 core is still miles away from local shops. And needless to say I need the machine as soon as possible.

    Thanx everyone for the input

July 06 release was the desktop version (Conroe). The mobile version in Mac Book (Merom) came out later – I think August-September.
