Sound sync issues in FCP
Hi, I’m having sound sync issues in FCP. Details are:
Footage was originally shot at 25 fps on super 16-film, with non-sync sound using Sony Hi-MD MiniDisc recorder — Hi-MD in PCM format and a clapper. Film was telecined to MiniDV NTSC 29.97 and captured into FCP. Sound was transferred from MiniDisc player to computer via Sony’s Sonic Stage to 44.1KHz WAV files. I converted these to 48KHz 16-bit AIFFs in iTunes, then imported to FCP.
So sequence settings are DV NTSC 29.97, 48KHz 16-bit. Video clips are 29.97fps. Sound clips are 48KHz 16-bit AIFFs. But the sound does not sync — starts off in sync and quickly gets ahead of video.
Now, I did try the following: set in points for both vid/aud at clapper mark, then out point toward end of clip at a precise sound. Put In to Out video on timeline, then “Fit To Fill” audio, with the result that audio slowed down to 95.64 and was close to sync. Obviously I’d like to figure out what the sync issue is and get it resolved precisely rather than just changing speed of all audio clips, if possible.
One other thing to note: although the video did not have audio with it when it was captured, each video clip has two empty mono tracks with it, and the audio rate is marked as 48001.5Hz in Browser_Audio Rate. Again, there is no actual audio for these clips but this makes me suspect that maybe the audio capture settings were not correct upon initial video capture, and I’m not sure if this would impact sync with the actual audio files.
Any suggestions/advice appreciated, thanks.
