I just wanted to get some opinions on Shared Video Storage. I know Apple has the XSan, XServe system but are there cheaper, easier solutions out there that other people are using? I’d also like to hear from anyone that is using the XSAN, XServe system to see what the ups and downs are. My company has been working on projects lately that have been pretty complex as far as media goes and I trying to see what options are out there. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Yeah… There’s many systems out there now. We are using the TerraBlock system and its awesome. Ciprico makes one. CalDigit is another.

Any of these systems are great, but, somehting you might want to look into… Check to see if any can resize on the fly. The TerraBlock system does not, and trying to figure out how much drive space you’re going to need is difficult at times.

Let me also say that these systems are still pricey BUT not as much as an XSAN. They are easier to use and more user friendly, but, these are for the heavy user with a large workload.

Try the san networks forum, they will probably be able to help more there.

Do you need a file based or volume based san?

    Checked out Metasan?

Will iscsi be coming in the new year?

    Is it Worth it?

Whaddya kiddin me? Is it worth it? Is the Pope Catholic?

Sneaker net is so 80’s. Run, don’t walk to your nearest VAR and find out about the various options out there. Seriously.

There’s many choices to fit any budget. The most important thing is to get networked soon. You won’t regret it.

My personal choice is X-SAN, but many are scared away by the price. I say, “you get what you pay for” as far as flexibility and capability. X-SAN leads the pack in this regard.
If your budget is more limited there are many “San in a can” options that may be right for you.
