  Exporting custom sized Quicktime MOVs without square pixels

  I posted the other day about setting up a new FCP project for a 2 screen installation. Thanks for all the suggestions – I decided to continue working with 2 full size DV PAL clips side by side in a project sized at 1440×576.

  When I complete a section, I have been exporting it as a quicktime mov – giving it the custom settings of 1440×576 (same as the sequence settings). Just brought a few of these quicktimes back into the project, BUT they now have square pixels and haven’t retained the PAL CCIR601 pixel aspect setting — so they no longer fit.

  The whole reasoning behind creating these work in progress MOVs was so I could drop them back into the timeline and not have to render.

  Any suggestions of how to force FCP to make these MOVs with non square pixels?

  Just change the setting in the bin after you import the clips. All FCP will do is apply a distort to the clip. You could also apply the distort to one clip in timeline, then copy and paste the attribute to all the clips once they’re in the timeline.

  FCP only recognizes pixels as non-square when they fit a specific non-square setting. 720×486, 720×480, etc. Any odd non-standard size and it will interpret them as square.

  FCP won’t let me change the setting in the bin from square pixels.
  Resetting the aspect ratio to zero in motion does the trick, but still leaves the clip needing rendering — looks like I’ll have to live with this.
