How to DOWNGRADE FCP 5.1.2 to 5.0
Hello Creative Cow,
I had to upgrade my personal machine to FCP 5.1 to work on a HD project that used P2 cards. Unfortunately, most of my clients have not yet upgraded to 5.1 (which Apple makes rather difficult and/or costly).
The problem is the only full version of FCP I have is 1.25 which runs on OS 9 and while I can reinstall it successfully, it will not run in Classic mode. And since I can’t run it, I can’t enter the serial number to activate it, which in turn disables my ability to use my upgrade disc to get back to 5.
Is there a simple solution here that won’t waste more man hours?

You only need the serial number from the FCP 1 disks… don’t need to install it.
FCP 5’s install disk will ask for both it’s and the old serial number.

When I purchased the fcp 5 suite upgrade, I installed it on a tiger system and was prompted for the original serial number for a full version (I think at the end of the install). I decided to upgrade my 1st version of fcp ver.1.0 and all it took was the serial number. That was a while back but I’m sure that’s how it went. My fcp upgrade package was the 699.00 one. Perhaps if you were constantly upgrading, 1.25-2; 2-3; 3-4.5; 4.5-5, you wouldn’t have had to buy the $699.00 upgrade and it works differently. I’d just try installing the upgrade and see if it prompts you for a serial number and avoid installing the earlier version.

There is no need for YOU to downgrade. Let your clients know that they can open 5.1 or 5.0 projects via XML. Here is the tutorial:
