Thinking about that thread where he couldn’t sync up studio audio to a Panasonic camera capturing to P2…..

If you’re capturing digitally – like a DV camera to 29.97 or HD to 23.98 – when you play that back in FCP it should match perfectly to real-time… correct? As in: normally we get stuff from film shot at 24 fps, but it gets video playback at 23.98 so it’s running slower. But since digital is just re-timing itself to 24 frames per 1.001 seconds, it’s conforming itself to a new relativity and should play back exactly as it was captured?

A little known or understood fact: audio has no frames.

It doesn’t matter what frame rate you shot or what TC rate is connected to the audio, the audio should synch properly if the picture is played back at the same frame rate that it was shot. If you shot 24 FPS and are playing back at 23.98, then you need to slow your audio down a teeny bit (0.01%?), otherwise, there should be no drift. Unless your audio recorder doesn’t record at a constant speed, which is rather a different issue.

That wasn’t what I was asking. Please read carefully.

Perhaps you need to make it clearly exactly what it is you’re actually asking. I’m not sure what the question is either.

    All the best,
