  • Audio Waveforms – Walter, I need your input

I seem to be having issues with audio waveforms being drawn, or not drawn… that’s the problem.

I have all the latest software out there and lately my FCP has had problems showing me the audio waveforms. Sometimes it will draw some parts of them and sometimes all of them but never the full timeline. Most of the time, I have to zoom completely in to see a waveform but when I zoom back out, I lose it again.

Walter, I remember a time a few weeks ago that you were dealing with something like this, did you get you answer or is this a bug of FCP? The reason I am asking this is, I’m an editor that lives by audio waveforms so that I can edit. Its like editing without a monitor to see the video. Its tough to do, but it can be done.

Now, let me say that I am having this issue on a Mac Pro Quad 3.0 with 2 gig of RAM AND on a PPC Dual 2.7 with 6.5 gig of RAM, so it can’t be the computers, since they are totally different. The only thing similar is the software and its all the latest.

Can someone shed some light on this?

Delete the waveform cache files. This should do it.

Delete the cache like Chi mentioned and then when you reopen your timeline, let it get drawn completely before continuing your edit.

I was? I honestly don’t recall having an audio waveform issue, I think that was someone else.

Try deleting the Waveform cache as suggested by chi.

I’ve heard others say this and I can’t figure out what they’re being used for myself. All they do for me is slow things down. Good thing you’re not a tape to tape editor I guess I’m used to scrubbing and marking on the fly. I utilize waveforms in the viewer when editing VO into the timeline, only because it’s easy to see where the next take is going to be, but that’s about all the use I get out of them. Everyone’s different.

    Sorry, Walter….

You’re right… I remember something about a Zoom tool issue you were having…. Oh well… I guess my mind is starting to slip while I’m frantically editing for the January 07 season.

Yeah, that’s it. When you zoom in past a certain point, you don’t get feedback when you move the video tracks around. I dont’ know about you, but my brain is about fried at this point with all the work we have going on. Really hope we can get someone hired shortly to help out.

I’m in the same boat as you!

It’s tough to find someone who can shoot and edit hunting and fishing shows that doesn’t want the same rates as ESPN pays.

Wayne, are you mixing FCP 5.0.4 project with FCP 5.1.2? I just had another editor bring an FCP 5.0.4 project to me to finish and it’s only drawing out about half of the waveforms after I allowed FCP to update the project to FCP 5.1.2.

I trashed the Waveform Cache and all the waveforms are now in there normally.
