FCP 5.1.2 Bug on a MacPro
Posted by Mark Maness on November 14, 2006 at 7:16 pmI’m sure I got this one right!
While editing in FCP, if I change a clip in any way that needs rendering such as adding a Color Corrector 3-Way to a clip that has a graphic applied to it (and adjusted to my liking), the render file doesn’t get deleted and the Canvas window does not update. If I move the graphic up one track and back down, everything refeshes. Then I can render the clip.
I am using a MacPro Quad 3.0, 2 gig of RAM, ATI X1900 XT, ATTO FC-41ES, AJA Kona 3 with K3 box. Software: FCS 5.1.2, Mac OS 10.4.8, Quicktime 7.1.3, AJA Kona 3 driver 3.2.
I can reproduce this every single time, even after deleting the preferences AND zaping the PRAM. I’ve noticed this for some time. BUT, now this is getting really annoying. I’m editing a DVCPro HD 1080i 29.97 sequence and using the AJA Kona 3 preset for this.

Could you explain what this is? A clip with a graphic? You mean on the track above it? CC 3-way is normally a real-time output filter and does not need rendering. This may be a problem specific to Kona users.
All the best,

Yeah…..
Maybe I need to speak more plain…
Track 1 has a video clip. Track 2 has a graphic from LiveType on it.
If you apply any effect like Color Corrector 3-way, the render should be deleted and need to be re-rendered. But it doesn’t. If you double click on the clip again, the Canvas window is updated, but the render file still isn’t deleted and your timeline (sequence) isn’t updated UNTIL I move the clip up a track or over to the left or right and placed back in it original location. In this case, all I have to do is move the LiveType file up one track and back down, then the timeline (sequnce) is updated and needs to be rendered.

No… This is not a Kona issue since the Kona doesn’t write specific files, just plays specific codec files.
Oh, one more thing… I also have a PPC Dual 2.7 with 6.5 gig of RAM with the same software, and it does not occur on this system at all.

This sounds like an issue with older render files after the 5.1.2 crossgrade. Try deleting all render files in that project and then rerender, it should make everything work as you’ve come to expect.

November 14, 2006 at 8:21 pmI can’t reproduce this on a 17″ MacBook Pro. What do you have set for Effects Handling in System Settings?

It all set to Final Cut Pro.

You proabably won’t. I have an ATTO fibre channel card, an AJA Kona 3, and an ATI X1900 XT video card. All of them have their latest drivers installed.
I have to say that editing on a MacPro with my configuration has been a real nightmare to this point. Oh well, that does happen with a new platform.

November 14, 2006 at 10:56 pmThis is a new project that was started after the crossgrade. And its only occurring on my MacPro system, not on the PPC.
Oh yeah… I did try that and it still does it…
Now, I’m also noticing that the audio waveforms are missing. Makes it tought to edit to audio when you can’t see a wave form.

November 14, 2006 at 11:14 pmTo get your waveforms back, go to the bottom left of the timeline and click on the triangle to the right of the four rectangles. There you will see a menu and SHOW AUDIO WAVEFORMS is listed.
Sorry…no help on the other thing…

Yeah, I tried that… I tried to delete the render files and restart FCP. Nothing.
No matter what I do on my MacPro, I still don’t get any audio waveforms to show up. Like I said before, I don’t have any of these problems on my PPC system.
APPLE…. Fix this, PLEASE…..

We’re getting them fine here on a Mac Pro Quad 3.0, FCP 5.1.2, Kona 3. Can’t recall losing them at all on our end. FCP performs normally on the Mac Pro.

I’m sorry, I have forgotten… Do you have the ATI X1900 XT on your MacPro, Walter?
I seem to be the one with all the issues these days. So, I’m trying my best to troubleshoot all of these headaches.
Funny thing though…. While editing today, some of my audio waveforms were coming back. I’m not getting a complete wavform through the whole clip but I’m getting most of it sometimes. Yeah, I know it sounds weird but I wonder if this is a memory issue since I do only have 2 gig as a max for right now.
