  JVC HD in Final Cut Pro

  Hi,

  I’m about to shoot a music video on HD but I’m unsure of the best way to go, in terms of the post-production.

  We have access to a JVC 101A (PAL) but I’m worried that I’m going to have problems bringing the HD into Final Cut ie. will it have to render every clip before I can access them?

  I know that Final Cut works with Panasonic HD so I’d much prefer to go with a Panasonic camera – perhaps the AG-HVX202EN PRO P2 (PAL). Even with this though I’m unsure if it works ‘straight off’ the camera into Final Cut.

  Perhaps someone could enlighten me? Do I need to render with JVC or Sony sourced HD? And does the HD from the AG-HVX202EN PRO P2 work in Final Cut, or do you need to ‘do something else first’?

  I’m editing on Final Cut Pro 4.5 (not 5) if that matters.

  PS – I’m also tossing up whether or not to buy a Decklink HD card. Is it necessary or can Final Cut do the job alone?

  All you need to do is import the footage into FCP and then start cutting. However, you will need to have FCP 5.1.2, for that is the only version that supports PAL formats of DVCPRO HD. You might need FCP 5.1.2 for the JVC as well, but I don’t know the camera.

  For how to work with footage shot with the HVX-202EN, watch this tutorial. Sure, it is NTSC, but it works for both…

  I don’t believe 4.5 is suitable for either format. I don’t remember exactly, but I didn’t think P2 support came out until 5.0. Equally unsure about JVC HDV support. v4.5 is now a couple of years old I think.

  JVC was supported, but not 720 24P or 25P, until 5.1.2. You can use LumiereHD
  or other products for older versions of FCP. But best to upgrade FCP.
