Sony 330 to FCP 5.0.4
Posted by Michael Allen on November 8, 2006 at 1:58 pmI have a Sony 330, Kona LH, and FCP 5.0.4 (I have not upgraded yet). I want to capture from the camera to final cut through the component cables with my Kona. I want to shoot in HQ 35mb quality setting. I will be using the 24P or 30P setting as well (not in the same sequence).
Question one: What is my capture and sequence setting if I shoot 24P???
Question two: What is my capture and sequence setting if I shoot 30P???
This is the equipment and software I have at the moment, what is the best workflow considering these elements?

November 8, 2006 at 3:28 pmFirst, let me say that the crossgrade for FCP is only $49 unitl the end of December and it is a well worth investment for you. The latest version of FCP has full support for XDCAM HD imbedded in it and with the Sony XDCAM transfer software, you’ll be in hog heaven!
To answer your questions for the present….. Capture and edit using the DVCPro HD codecs. You may have to create your settings, I think, but you can do this very easily. Almost everyone here is using that for HD because of the files sizes and high quality for the output. And besides, if you can’t afford an HDCAM machine, chances are the facilities you’ll be airing use DVCPro HD. So, it only makes sense to edit and output to the same.
NOW…. if you upgrade your FCP (which is very very cheap for the moment), you can stay in the XDCAM HD codec throughout your entire edit until you output and since you have a Kona LH, you can output to anything.

November 8, 2006 at 4:00 pmYeah… Just capture and edit using the AJA Kona LH DVCProHD setups. I’m not sure if there is a 24p setup but if you have the latest software from AJA, it should be there.

November 8, 2006 at 4:35 pmI was told that the camera outputs with pulldown, does this effect the FCP settings?

November 8, 2006 at 5:48 pmIt is my understanding that because XDcam uses a non-standard pulldown ( NOT standard or Advanced) that you cannot currently extract the progressive frames over HDSDI out of the camera or deck– yet ( Wayne- pipe in if I am wrong)
The video out over HDSDI is always going to be at 60i – the only way I have extracted the progressive frames is via a FW capture into FCP 5.1.2, using the 1.1 version of the software.

I’m not too sure about that… I’ve sucessfully extracted 23.98 using the pull down feature of the F70 deck just fine but that may be that deck only. I’m not very sure of the cameras but I would have to guess that it will work just fine. I used the AJA Kona 3: DVCProHD 1080i29.97 Easy Setup.
You could hook up you camera to the HD-SDI out, connect your camera via firewire for machine control and capture away in FCP.

True. And I will have to say that the easiest route is using the Sony software. I have to ask, Gary… Did you get you software from Sony’s UK site?

Correct, currently only the EU version is available, I had to use a UK email address to download it here.

November 8, 2006 at 9:19 pmYeah… I did the same. Its kinda silly to have a UK release and not the US release also since the equipment is both systems.
