External Drive Recommendations?
New to FCP and Creative Cow. Quickly toasted drive space on 17″ MacBook Pro and need recommendations for external drive/drives that take advanage of the FW800 port this unit is sporting. Please share experience. i get mixed reviews on Lacie drives but open to any suggestions on makes and models that are fast and reliable, Lacie too if there are models better than others. Of course I needed to buy somthing yesterday, so anyone willing to share in an expeditious manner will be greatly appreciated!

Man, if you just search the forum for HARD DRIVE RECOMMENDATION you will find tons, as we answer this quite often.
I will just say G-RAID or any drive by G-technology.com. I live by them.

These seem bommer so far – I have 3 x250 gig drives. -
Sounds like you are editing off of your main Hard Drive, that is never a good idea. Because the drive is already having to work to run the OS and any programs yoou have open video play back can suffer (dropped frames etc).
Always edit from a second Hard Drive
Lacie drives are great the only one I have seen fail is one that was knocked off of a desk.

Lacie drive enclosures are rugged, however I have had problems with the firewire sockets on the D2 drives – they’re flimsy IMHO – and this may be very relevent for mobile use. FW800 seems a more rugged connector in general, so that may help. The Lacie drives themselves are excellent though – never lost data.
I can recommend G-Raid as well, very robust and reliable in my experience – I keep one with each system as a back-up array for SD work.
And for pity’s sake – get all that video off your internal drive!

LaCie and G-Tech are both excellent products for FW800, though I’ve noticed that our brand new G-RAID 1000 has a dramatic loss in write / read speed when another FW800 unit is daisy chained off of it. Have never seen that with any previous model.
Ditto all the folks here telling you move the media off your internal. NEVER capture media to your internal System Drive, whether you’re running a laptop or desktop machine.

Depending on what format you’re working with, you may want to shoot for an SATA RAID and connect it with an SATA express card. I don’t have either of those or a MBP, so I can’t give you much in the way of real-world experience with this setup. The FW 800 solutions will be easier if they’ll do what you need.

Many thanks to all that replied! My level of green for FCP and CreativeCow is now complete and obvious, so thanks for the well-meant advice…and yes, I will remove the Vid content from my system drive ASAP. I’m stunned by the rapid willingnes to share. This is a great forum and I thank you all again for taking the time to respond. Your kindness is appreciated! Only problem now is finding any store in Denver that actually has these drives in stock…I think I’ve just found a niche market…
