  • TWO 23″ OR ONE 30″ ?

I am building a facility for 35mm, 4k, 2k and HD. Besides the Quantel iQ/Pablo room with Sony 4k projection, I will have sub rooms (3 to start with)with FCP/AJA. Should I get two 23″ monitors for each FCP room or one 30″ for each station?

two – 30’s….hee hee hee. The apple 23″ have a lot of trouble with dead pixels and ghosting. The 30″ are appearently less problematic. Don’t have much experience with other brands.

I’d go with two 23s – but look at the Dell’s. Do a ‘Search Posts’ (above left) for Dell 23″ and you’ll get a lot of feedback about them.

    Hope that helps.

I’ve been happy with my Apple 30″. I had 2, 21″ CRT monitors and this is way better. Easier to work with. Plenty of visual real estate for lots of bins, timelines etc. And it’s killer for After-Effects and Photoshop, where you can use the whole screen the work with. Personally, I wouldn’t go back to duals for editing.

Let me drop my two cents into this ring….

I use two 20″ Apple displays on my systems. Two 23″s would have been nice BUT I have heard there are problems with those and two 30″ displays would have been too large for editing, besides that would have cost us another $6k just for the displays. Our budget was a little tighter and the 20″ Apple displays have had no problems what so ever. So I think it would be beneficial to look at two 20″ displays and saving the money for something else.

    Its worth a look!

I think the ergonomics on 2×23″ is better – the eyeline is not so high, and you can more efficiently seperate the windows – most people prefer to put their bins on one monitor, with the audio mixer and waveforms possibly, and the viewer/canvas/timeline on the other. It also looks better for the clients 😉

Many people prefer the Dell 24″ (not 23″ as previously stated) as the screen is as good as if not better than the Apple screens, and they are nearly half the price – could save you a few thousand dollars. They have one other killer app – video inputs to allow greater flexibility in a post environment. You could send a tape deck BITC to one, or router output for preview etc – obviously I’m not suggesting using one instead of a tube for final output, but video can be sent to them to allow client previews – or to watch TV during a long render!

    Hope this helps.
