  low volume, no range on v.o. narration audio

  I’m running fcp 4.1.1 on os X.3.9 on my G-4 1.4 dual gig and attempting to use the v.o. narration tool but, using 3 different kinds of mics in my line input port, I cannot get a proper volume level or dynamic range (I tried it in garage band and had the same problem). I set my System Preference, Sound, audio input level all the way up and I also set my Utilities, Audio Midi Set up, Audio device, built in audio all the way up. By the way, using the same 3 different mics on my mini dv camera in the external mic mode, the levels and ranges are fine.

  Any suggestions?

  I would record to the camera or VTR then capture.

  or

  Isn’t there an input level slider in the capture window/capture settings?
  Crank it to the right.
