You’ve hit the non-universal wall. You’re going to have to crossgrade your install discs to the universal versions to get newer updates. For what it’s worth, there a big benefits to updating even on a PPC Mac. Versions 5.1.1 and 5.1.2 have both introduced some great new features and performance enhancements.

Better do it soon, I don’t think these prices will be around for much longer. After that you’ll have to upgrade instead of “crossgrade” and that will be more expensive.

Hate to say it, but 5.1 is the update. I’ve known a lot of people who are fighting it buying the upgrade, but the cost to get the Universal version is so small, it’s worth shelling out the cash for the features you might be be missing.

It’s you. You’re just trading in one version of FCP 5 for another version of FCP 5. You paid for one complete version so they’re charging you essentially for the shipping and handling to make the swap. You’ll note that no new serial number is issued with these discs, you continue to use the same serial number from your full purchased copy of FCP 5.

You can make disk images of your install disks.
Put them away on a hard drive for later use if need be.
I believe this is totally legal.
I have reinstalled using the images, no need to burn back to disk. -
