Media Manager
Posted by Suzanne on October 10, 2006 at 7:07 pmHey all,
I’m at the end of my rope on this one. I have a multiclip show that I’m trying to media manage. I’ve tried so many different ways, I couldn’t possibly list them all, but it’s just not working. It’s not reconnecting to my media, or it’s saying it’s reconnected but I’m looking at black, or it’s referencing different timecodes, or a variety of other problems. I’ve removed all the motion attributes since I have several speed changes, and it still won’t work.
Can someone please talk me thru the steps of media managing a multi-clip project? I’ve run out of ideas.

October 10, 2006 at 9:08 pmYou should be running FCP 5.0.4 or FCP 5.1.2…
What exactly do you want the media to do? ie.. delete unused? or move it or?

October 10, 2006 at 9:35 pmI’m on 5.0.4. Sorry I wasn’t specific on that before.
I have the episode complete and it’s aired, now we’re trying to consolidate the media for storage and clear drive space for upcoming shows.
The closest I’ve gotten is this:
I’ve dupicated the sequence, removed all speed attributes, made clips independent, collapsed my multiclip and ran it thru media manager with the following options:
Copy (not including render files)
Delete unused media from duplicated items.
1 sec. Handles
Base media on “existing file names”
Duplicate selected items and place in new project
Include nonactive multiclip angles.I can open up my media managed project and the clips are reconnected, however the sequence doesn’t play the video, just black. And all the clips names in the sequence have (variable) at the end of it. I can select the clips, uncollapse it, change the active angle and then change it back again and it will play. I can’t imagine going thru 9 episodes and doing that for every single clip. Although I’ll be employeed for a good long while, I’ll also go crazy. There must be some way to media managed a multiclip show. Any ideas?

October 10, 2006 at 10:12 pmYes, it did. But I removed all the speed changes to the sequence before I Media Managed it.
HOWEVER, in my new media managed sequence, it’s still reading speed changes. So if I select all and remove the speed attributes AGAIN, it seems to work. Perhaps this is the only way. I don’t know why, but it’s the closest thing to success that I’ve found.
Any other thoughts/ideas welcome, as I’m sure this isn’t the ideal way to do things.

this may seem obviuous, but have you tried “collapsing” the multiclips in the sequences before media management? ie change the multiclips diplay to the single display?
and if so, have you also tried “uncollapsing”?
I found that when editing a multiclip show having the clips collpased or not caused fcp to react differently as far as effects and filters

October 10, 2006 at 10:45 pmYes, I’ve tried it both ways. Currently, I’m media managing with the clips “collapsed”. Thanks for the input, every little bit helps.

October 11, 2006 at 7:38 amUpgrade upgrade upgrade.
Mediamanager has been getting better and better, and I find I have very seldom any problems with the latest version of fcp, compared to the hell I used to go through with earlier versions
Remember that the upgrade is extremely cheap, and will probably solve all your problems.

October 11, 2006 at 1:07 pmI can vouch for that as well. 5.1.2 still isn’t perfect but it’s about 90% there now.
I’ve still had some speed related issues, but most of the time it gets it right.
Now if they can just sort out the subclip, master clip, sequence relationships I will
be happy. -

October 11, 2006 at 8:35 pmI’ve uprezzed many multicam shows (that’s doing basically the same thing
you need to do with MM) and I never collapse multicam angles.
And why are you capturing all your angles if you are consolidating?
Why capture three angles of a four angle multiclip when you don’t need to?I’d do MM without collapsing multicam items and then not
ask MM to add the unused angles.Having said that, MM works OK, but it still does not
capture my still frames. It lists them but doesn’t capture them.Dan

October 13, 2006 at 6:47 pmThanks for everyone’s input. Unfortunately, the upgrade is out of my hands. This is not a personal project, but an actual show for an actual network. The company hasn’t gotten around to the upgrade yet, and that’s probably a corporate decision that as a freelancer I do not get involved in.
All the camera angles were captured and I grouped them for the editors to cut with. Now that the season is finished, the company would like the media managed with the non-active camera angles to be vaulted onto an external hard drive. Should they decide to recut a special, or if the promo department needs footage, or a variety of other unforseen reasons, this is the way they want it.
I finally got episode 1 to work (it only took 6 working days), and a few of the clips didn’t reconnect, but I manually went thru and reconnected them myself. Not too horrible. But now I’m trying to work on episode 2, retracing my steps from the last episode, and it’s not working again. I’ll try to run it thru again without collapsing the multiclips this time. Keep your fingers crossed, I hope this works.
Thanks again,
Suzanne
