    Hi-

I just installed FCP Studio (universal crossgrade FCP 5.1, DVD Studio 4.1) and do not see the MPEG-2 option under Export using QT Conversion.

From researching some posts it seems that this option is no longer available and that we are being forced into using Compressor. Is this true and if so why does the help manual still tell you that if you install Studio Pro MPEG-2 should be an option in QT conversion? This is what the help still says (page 225).

[Lauren] “Compressor is a pain in the butt – way too fussy – when working with a client the export MPEG-2 via quicktime conversion is much faster and more efficient. “

    You cant change this behavior.

Give Compressor a chance…once you set it up, its not fussy at all. You can even set up a droplet, if you like…then all you have to do is export a reference movie from FCP and drag it to the droplet. It can even run in the background while you continue to work.

    Lauren,

How do you know the latest version of Compressor is a pain in the butt? If you didn’t even know it was necessary then it tells me you haven’t tried it. Things change. You’ve got to be flexible and you better be prepared to learn new ways of doing things, because I can promise you that today’s status quo will be gone by tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Compressor is actually quite flexible. You have at least three major options for using it.

    1) Export via Compressor from the timeline — your very best MPEG2 encode, but more time consuming and FCP is dead during processing.
    2) Export a self-contained QT file from FCP and then use Compressor independently from FCP — fast, not the best quality, but acceptable for client reviews etc.
    3) Export a QT reference file and then use Compressor independently from FCP — even faster, also not the best quality, but the speediest way to get out a DVD.

Both 2 na 3 allow you to go back to editing in FCP while encoding in the background.

Why would items 2 and 3 not be as good quality as #1? Do you feel it happens in compressor or are you saying that outputing files using methods 2/3 produce lower quality output?

    Hi
Its Tiger 10.4+ that removed the QT MPEG-2 option – with QT7 in 10.3.9 its still there.

    Vince,

When you use Compressor for 2-pass VBR encoding from the timeline within FCP it optimizes compression for each clip and each transition on the timeline. It takes longer, but it should deliver the best quality.

[Lauren] “If there is a way to make this work again can someone let me know?”

No. Compressor works just fine here.

Manual obviously needs to be updated. Not everything in the manual is correct.

Thanks to all for your resonses.

I have used compressor in the past but have always avoided it when possible. I guess I just have to suck it up and really finally learn it – now I just have to somehow find the time to do it… I know that contatnly relearning and adapting is part of the nature of this stuff but it sure does get exhausting!

    Lauren,

The deal with Compressor is only that the interface is different from all other Apple apps, but its actaully quite easy once you get the hang of it. Once you get the paradigm you’ll probably slap your forehead (as I did) and feel really silly for not realizing how simple it was the whole time.

    Hi Guys-
I’m trying to export mpeg-2 files from compressor to finish a DVD project for work but I keep getting a quicktime error: 0 message. Can someone help me figure out what I may be doing wrong? It’s my first really robust project out of FCPHD and this is getting really frustrating. = )
Thanks in advance for your help.
