Digitized one hour Discovery HD project shot on PDW-F350 XDCamHD @ 35 Mbps via HD-SDI into FCP 5.1.1 using Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 59.94 JPEG codec. We now want to on-line the project using the 35Mbps XDCamHD codec. We know that we can use HD-SDI to digitize to another codec, but are hoping to not recompress the footage. 10-bit uncompressed HD will not work for us as we are using G-Raids and can not handle uncompressed HD.

    So what’s the problem?

XDCAM Transfer tool currently has no ability to import any kind of “Batch List” that might be generated following some Media Manager shenanigans.
Consequently. there’s no simple way to upres an edit originally captured via HD-SDI. So much for 2x realtime file transfer…

As a workaround, if you really want to edit in XDCAM HD @ 35Mbps, you should be able to create a capture preset using the HD-SDI input to the Blackmagic card, and set the compressor to use XDCAM HD (35Mbps).
But this is going all around the houses and will just be recompressing anyway ( so you might as well recomprees to, and cut in, DVCPRO HD)

I agree with Andy! I have been XDCAM for the past year now, and its awesome BUT getting it into FCP has always been area pain. The real problem with the XDCAM Transder software is that you still have to change the names of your clips and log any other info that you need to organize the footage.

So….. I tend to just use the old reliable method – Log & Capture. Now, if I need to make copies of programs or dump commercials to my system for integration, then the transfer software is the perfect solution. The other isssue is that camera guys don’t use the camera to mark clips and therefore you’ll end up with a file that is 10 min long and your clip is the last 30 seconds. Yeah, I know that you can do this in the transfer software BUT its just as easy as log and capture.

And then again…. I’ve been in the business for the last twenty years and making an old dog do new tricks is tough at best!

So…. what’s the lesson? You can’t off-line with XDCAM and hope to online with it UNLESS you rip the proxies off of the disc and that’s not supported in FCP just yet.
