    Hi,
I work on TV commercials post-production but now I’m being required to edit a whole movie. They’ll shoot on 16mm, transfer it to BetacamSP (my usual format) or some other video format so I can cut the movie with FCP. I guess I have to work with Cinema Tools (it will be the first time I use that software, I haven’t read the manual yet). I’ll add a lot of CG footage to the movie, since they’re going to use a lot of green screens, CG’s explosions and that kind of stuff. When the movie has it’s final cut they’re going to print it into 35mm and copy it for distribution and exhibition.
    My questions are:
What must be the ideal steps I have to take in order to get my cut into 35mm?
How do I have to send the CG footage to the 35mm transferrers?
Any link to a web page explaining the process would be very appreciated

You sound like you’re in a little deeper than you realize. Time to call a meeting of the producer, post-supervisor, CG and FX guys, transfer house, online/finishing house, 35mm print lab and figure out $$ vs. Quality vs. Time. Going for a full theatrical print with effects is a complicated process that can get really nasty if you don’t lay the groundwork 1st. Nothing worse than eye matching every cut in a feature.

You WON’T want to blow-up anything from NTSC to 35mm – It’ll look pretty rough… Cheapest decent solution is to finish in 1080 and laser scan that back to 35. But you need to get the EFX guys everything in 1080 to begin with, so that they don’t have to re-render, don’t have to pull new keys, etc….

You might want to check out efilm.com. They’ve got a lot of PDF’s and FAQ’s about getting from your NLE to a print.

If you got the chance, please do not transfer it to BetacamSP. That would be more or less like to transfer to DV. Do it to DVCPRO50 or a higher quality standart.
