I have been doing some test renders out of AE of files for use in FCPro.

When comparing the image quality of an 8bit uncompressed movie with a photo-jpeg at 100%, or even the Apple Intermediate Codec, I am not seeing an obvious difference between the movies, except the files size of the 8bit.

    What am I missing?

I have also rendered our of AE compositions with mixtures of live video and graphics, and again the quality of photo-jpeg and Apple Intermediate Codec look awesome.

I would love to hear your comments to help me get a handle on the benefit of the higher bandwidth codecs.

I understand Photo-jpeg has the potential for a build up of artifacts as the data is recompressed, but I’m wondering how many recompression trips are required?

    Thanks

Hi RJ, I’ve never done test for multigeneration with PhotoJPEG, but I did with DV. If you bring the clips with the different generations togueter to a time-line in FC, with themonitor and the VideoScope you can observe easily the difference between clips. Better if you use a test signal or pattern.
In the web site of ‘onerivermedia” there is the best comparative I’ve found between almost all the QT codedcs. There is also a very complet pattern to make tests.
    Salud,
    Rafael
