Camera to computer capture
When did this get broken?
I remember we used to do shoots in studio capturing directly to a laptop and a FW raid. We used capture now. The camera started recording first, capture was initiated, and at the end stopping the capture would stop the camera. The recording came in with camera TC and worked perfectly.
Something’s been broken in FCP that capture fails in this setup. After exactly 16 frames the capture stops with a stupid end of tape warning. This really sucks. This was incredibly useful. I’m sure it worked in v4. I don’t remember, but it may have worked in 4.5. Certainly isn’t working in v5 or 5.1. Does anyone know if this horrible oversight/bug/software failure has been remedied in 5.1.2?

I hope this is fixed too.
I planned on using a new Macbook Pro 17 inch to record on the set,
from a new Panasonic HDX 900 in HD. (the SDX900 didn’t have FW out
but the HDX does).
Can you still do it with “non controllable device”?
I know you won’t have camera timecode though.Dan

Negative that. Non-controllable device assumes there is no TC coming from the device so it generates its own. Every clip starts are zero. Unless the problem has been fixed with capture now, the capture to computer workflow is still hosed.

There must be a way to make FCP think it IS controlling a machine
and then it wouldn’t quit recording.
If you can roll a digibeta deck then hit “capture now” with FCP
in deck control mode, and FCP records the deck timecode,(which it does)
then why would you not be able to do the same thing from a
DV camera with it’s deck recording?
Unless of course, the DV camera isn’t feeding timecode out FW
at this point. Maybe they don’t do that. Maybe TC only is sent
when the camera deck is in play mode.Dan

I just did at test with FCP HD 4.5.
If you set the device control to “FW NTSC” and just hit Now (Capture Now), the TC comes streaming in with the Audio and Video.
If you set the device control to “Non-Controllable Device” and just hit Now (Capture Now), the TC is ignored and FCP substitutes its own starting at 00:00:00 (which it would not HAVE to do).
For instance, if you are playing a source that does not HAVE a “control” but DOES send TC, such as “SimpleVideoOut”

FCP could easily record that TC, but it doesn’t.
There could have been another FCP preset provided for Non-controllable FW device for “TC” or “No TC.”
I don’t know why, Tom, you can’t get FCP to “capture now” (FW NTSC preset) from your camera, but I’d try another couple of cameras to make sure its not just something odd with the camera you tried first.

So you are saying its works back with FCP 4.5,
but it does not work with 5.1.2 ?
I haven’t tried it since 4.5 either.Is there another app (preferably not one that costs a grand)
that we could use to just record a DV Stream with timecode and audio out
from the camera? It would need to do it with the DVCPRO100 codec for me.
Maybe there is one on the PC side, and we can just boot into Windoz to do it
on the Intel machines.Dan

Thank you for confirming that it DID once work. I wasn’t sure if it was in v4 or v4.5 and that I’m not crazy. My recollection was that it worked in earlier versions going back to at least v2.
Can you do the same thing in FCP 5.0, or 5.1, or even 5.1.2?

That’s what I’m really looking for, direct capture of DVCPRO HD, or even HDV. But I don’t think it works with anything anymore.
