iTunes is very good and very fast.

    That’s how I do it.

There may be other programs that will do it, too, but not QT Pro 7.

    * QuickTime 7 Pro cannot create MP3 files. You can use iTunes to convert files to MP3.

    That’s what I use.

You got a problem with that?

I use my iTunes to convert mp3’s and CD’s to 48K .AIFF – so its a bit of a shlep to have to go into the advanced settings and change the import settings to mp3.
So I was looking at an alternative program to avoid having to change my itunes settings.

There’s a free application called “Audacity” that you can use to do it. It’s a very useful little app. It includes tempo changing that enables you to shorten or lengthen audio. Works well if the change is slight. I use if under os x. Don’t know if there are non-mac versions. It seems to me that when I used the mp3 export function it told me that I had to download something else. I don’t remember what that was, but whatever it was I did it, and it worked.

I use Sorenson Squeeze for doing my mp3 conmversions. I haven’t found anything else that lets you do batch conversions and FTP uploads automatically.

Technically, the LAME mp3 codec is the best one for high-quality, high bitrate mp3s. I seem to remember that someone had figured out how to hack iTunes to use the LAME encoder instead of the built-in Fraunhofer codec in iTunes (which sounds absolutely horrible at nearly any bitrate, IMO)

Oddly enough, Squeeze is the only application on the Mac that can make decent sonuding low-bitrate mp3s (for audiobooks, podcasts, etc). It’s annoying that it isn’t Universal binary yet, but it still works fine.

Thanks so much for the input!

I’ll check out Audacity and Squeeze.
