720P to 1080i workflow
We have a client who wants his one hour program shot on a Panasonic Varicam in 720p & released in 1080i. We have a couple of FCP edit systems, one has a Kona II card and the other a Black Magic Decklink HD card.
We also have another project that is about half 720p and half 1080i, but must be released in 1080i.
We’ve released about 60 hours of 1080i programming, but this is our first foray into 720P and mixing 720P with 1080i. Anyone suggest the most efficient workflow for both projects?

I’d bounce the 720 to 1080 with a Kona 3 or a Decklink HD card that can cross convert: does yours?, or find me a terranex box to do it first tape to tape. Then finish it all in the same format. I can’t imagine how long a dual G5 might take to do an Advanced conversion, but maybe that might make sense if there’s not a lot of source material. Course this takes time.

Or play it out directly as 1080i from a 1200 or 1400 deck with an HD-SDI card.

Kona 2 cannot do the cross-convert. You would need a Kona 3 and what I would do is simply capture everything at 720p, finish the edit, then let the Kona 3 convert the finished project to 1080i on the way out.
Or if you’re editing in the DVCPro HD codec, simply master out to a DVCPro HD deck like the 1200A and then play that tape master out to 1080i right from the deck. The deck will do the cross-convert.

No difference working in 720 or 1080 that I’ve found, just 1080 creates larger file sizes really. If the project is shot in 720, or is mostly shot in 720, then work in that format. If it’s shot in 1080, then work in that format.
Again, the Kona 3 can perform a cross convert either during Ingest or Output so if you put that card into play, then you are open to any option you want to go with.
