MacGurus vs G Sata
I think I’ve narrowed down my choice for new SATA drives with FCP 5.1 and M100 HDe on a Dual Boot G5 Quad.
I think it’s between the Mac Guru Roll your own drives and G-SATA. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Not to demean the Burley SATA enclosure that Mac Gurus tout, but thats old technolgy with lots of internal cables, a noisy old-style fan, and old-style drive mounts. Check out the Seritek 4-bay drive enclosure from Firmtek. Its newer and better technology, with hot-swap drives, super-quiet fan, and backplate plug in design with no internal cables required.

I went with the Firmtek boxes. I have both a four bay for my G5, and a two bay that can travel for use with my Powerbook. I’m very happy with their quality, their quiet fans, and their small form factor. Like David, I also was impressed with the backplate design that eliminates internal cabling. As an added benefit, I think they look better too!

Thanks for the info. So if I went with the Seritek 4-bay drive enclosure from Firmtek, what drives would I buy? Also is thier host card any good as compared to a Sonnet E4P?

I think Firmtek makes just a 2-port PCIe card rather the 4-port PCIe card that you need for your Quad G5. So, you will need the Sonnet PCIe card.
As far as hard drives are concerned, at this moment in time the best deal for the money seems to be Hitachi 500gb SATA drives. If you call Derrick at Bason Computer and tell him you’re a Firmtek customer he’ll give you a price break — the cost is somehere around $170 per drive, which is pretty sweet.
