  • Format choice suggestions for project with much Beta SP

Posted by Paul Johnson on September 23, 2006 at 11:48 pm

I’m working on a project that has several segments shot in DVCPRO HD 720p 30P (about half of the finished product will be DVCPRO HD) and alot of archival footage from Beta SP. Final output will be DVCAM to be projected with a NEC GT5000 projector. I’ve been toying with the idea of what format to work in, curious if anyone has any suggestions. I was going to just work in DV but should I try and maintaiin the 4:2:2 color space until final output and then convert to DV. Should I capture my Beta SP to 8 bit uncomppressed and work with that or DV? I normally don’t work with archival footage so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Billy

If your final product will be DV, then work in DV. All the work you use to maintain the 4:2:2 colorspace (DVCPRO HD timeline or 8-bit uncompressed) will all be lost the INSTANT you compress to DV.

Your timeline format is the least of your problems. How are you going to deal with the different aspect ratios of HD (16 X9) and SD( 4 X 3)?

To me that isn’t an issue. Drop DVCPRO HD footage in a DV timeline and it’ll be letterboxed. For a piece like this going back and forth between letter box and 4:3 isn’t a problem.

    YesBilly,
If I would go to play from a CVCam, I wpould just keep in DV. But if I could, I would play from a DVD. Them I would edit in 8/10b Unc depinding how I have digitalized the B-cam stuff.

[rafalaos] ” But if I could, I would play from a DVD.”

A DVD is processed and burned using a much WORSE compresssion scheme than DV.

MPG2 allows much more quality than DV. Although use a 420 sampling system, this is different than the 420 used by PAL.
Even if I wouldn’t be 422 footage, I would never go to DV except to print to video in DV. Go to DV is expoil all that you have done to yo your footage and graphics. In this case, working with 8/10b Unc, with more reasons.
But out of technicall matters, for me, visually DVD looks better than the original DV file. I think that the people that developed the MPG2 standart the did hit the jackpot. When ever I play a DV film from my computer or vido-desk and I compare it with the same film in DVD, I like more the DVD. The image get a nicer texture.

[rafalaos] “MPG2 allows much more quality than DV.”

    Sorry, no.

    The compression is much worse.

    Hi Matte,
MPG2 allows 422 and 444 samplin, and 16.000×16.000 pixels images. In fact many of the new HD systems are using MPG2.
Yu don’t have to mistake MPG2 with Compresor. With Compressor we can use few of the possibilities that the MPG2 format offer us.
    Salud,
    Rafael
