Quicktime 7.1.3
Am very happy with where I’m at right now. Should I do the update? Anybody out there with a similar set up experiencing any positive or negative effects of installing the update?

The latest QT update is fine with 5.1.1, but since you already have the standard QT version installed that was in use for 5.04, you may not want to or need to update. The real question is, why haven’t you updated FCP yet? 5.1.1 has some very real improvements, and all future FCP updates will require that you have the universal binary version installed.

QT 7.1.3 is rumored to cause problems with XSan. I got that in an email form one of my suppliers, but if that doesn’t apply to you, then you should be okay.
The new itunes interface is totally kick butt and worth the upgrade.

I have installed it on three FCP machines (all are running 5.1 though) and everything is irie.

Thanks for all the input. I’m a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” kinda guy. That pretty much explains my reasoning for still being on 5.0.4.

Hey Jeremy. I apologize for the silly question but in the interest of learning more about FCP I will pose it. What is Xsan? I see this mentioned alot and don’t undrestand what it is. I have also heard about the QT 7.1.3 issues involving it so I wanted to see what it is. I googled it and see that it stands for storage. I have an Xserv raid set up at home with a terabyte of storage but that would not mean that Xsan is another word for Xserv…is it?
Does QT 7.1.3 mess with Xserv that you have heard of?

XSan is a system and software to allow multiple users to access networked storage (Storage Area Network = SAN). It’s a complicated system and is not easy to set up, plus to make it worth while you need lots and lots of ultra super fast storage so that multiple users don’t suck up all the bandwidth, then you need a fibre channel network, and then a dedicated computer to handle metadata attached to a separate ethernet network. It’s not for the faint of heart or light on the pocketbook. And don’t worry, it’s not a silly question. If you get it up and running, the workflow opportunities are tremendous if you have a multiple seat editing facility. XServe is a computer that is dedicated to be a server. XSan is software.
regarding the problem, I got this from a supplier that I get equipment from, but I don’t have XSan so I don’t know the exact problem:
“Issue or symptom
We’ve been receiving more reports of a possible conflict between Xsan and QuickTime 7.1.3 and/or iTunes 7. The problems appear to span Xsan 1.2 to 1.4. We urge you to avoid updating to the latest iTunes and Quicktime until more information is available.
When the problems occur, clients lose access to the SAN volume. Restarting the client does not help. Intermittently, the volume may reappear.
Solution
Revert to iTunes 6.x and Xsan 1.3.”
