  • borders on cropped clips?

Posted by Tad Newberry on September 21, 2006 at 4:16 pm

    hey,

i’ve cropped an image on the sides, and so now when i try to put on the FCP border filter, the border is cropped as well, so no border shows up on those cropped sides, but i do get the border showing on the top and bottom (where the clip was not cropped). how do we put a border on a cropped clip?

thanks for helping out a bonehead!

I believe (compressing right now so I can’t test) if you pre-comp your image you can apply a border to a cropped image. Select your clip, and go to Sequence > Nest Items. Now apply your border to the sequence that is in your timeline. Double-clicking the sequence in the timeline will open it, so you have to select it and press return to open it in the viewer to tweak your filter. This can be a handy trick, but nested sequences can cause a lot of trouble in an off-line on-line situation, and there comes a point when you should just do your effect in Motion or AE, and just bring the result back into FCP.
If I remember correctly and that works for you, that should do you well for simple things like that.

    Hope that helps,
    Zak

The Digital Heaven plug-in DH_Box allows you to crop and resize with a border on the cropped image. The border feature is built into the
    plug-in.

I agree that nesting is super dangerous at times. From experience, never media manage a sequence that has nests in it. That will totally screw everything up. We use plug-in’s here and Digital Heaven, or CGM work great!
