Re-naming clips cut from one long clip?
Forgive me if this is a “Calf” question, but this is the first time I’ve run into this and it’s making me NUTS.
On the current project my task is to take someone else’s show (supplied on tape in its edited state as one single stretch of program) and re-cut the sections to shorten and make them match new narration. So… I simply digitized the whole show and now I’m attempting to cut out various parts to re-lay into a timeline.
Problem: Unlike other NLEs (of which I am obviously more familiar) everytime I re-name one of these cut out sections FCP re-names the entire digitized show and all of the other cut out parts to this new name. This makes it impossible to tell the scenes apart by name.
Isn’t there some way that FCP will allow me to do what I want short of re-digitizing each scene and supplying unique names??
Am I missing something really obvious? Everything I’ve done in FCP up to this point has been based on digitizing from my own camera originals so I’ve never run into this before.

You need to either make the separate clips you make master clips, or make them subclips (which in FCP are master clips). The clips you’re making are affiliate clips to the master they’re being cut from and have to have the same name.

Viola! Do wonders never cease? Thans, Tom. I knew there had to be an easy way to do this. I assume that as “sub-clips” they do not duplicate the media, just the “directions” to it?
