Editing a feature length documentary on my Dual2.5Ghz G5/6G Ram
FCPro4.5 HD (Will upgrade to 5.1 after the project’s finished)

What’s becoming to be really annoying is the following prompt:

    “Preparing Video For Display”

If I create a white matte to put under a small headline,
I have to watch paint dry while waiting for this task to run it’s course.

Are there any workarounds short of upgrading my video card that shipped
    with the cpu?

If upgrading is the answer, what should I get to speed up this process?

    Thnx.

I had a similar issue. I found that my drives were extremely ful, like 20GB free on a 500GB drive. Once I freed drive space up thimgs ran much better.
What are your drives like? Are you using external firewire drives, internal SATA drives or a SAN ?
How much free space do you have on them?

More RAM helped me with that. I went from 2.5GB to 3.5GB and that issue went by faster.

I agree with Steve it is good to ALWAYS have at least 10 percent of your drive open

What about the maintenance of your system? permissions, caches, etc? Whenever FC start to slow or making funny things I do dat before passing Diskwarrior or Techtools. If things do not get better, I open a new FC project and I drag and drop everything from the brownser of the original project. As the last solution I trash the preferences (no funny to do it in the middle of a project). Before I kill my self, if that doesn’ works, I re-install FC.
