  • How should I transfer media efficiently from old external to new external drive?

Posted by Zack Hill on September 8, 2006 at 7:46 pm

i recently purchased a new external drive due to a failing Lacie Big Disk Extreme, and am now a bit stumped on how efficiently move the media from my big disk to my new raid drive. My issue is that I have 300gb plus of media that is being used my about 7 different projects that are all related, and I figure I could move all the media and then do a massive reconnect session to link up the files to the projects, but not sure if this is the best way to do it, seeing it would be quite a process. I also thought maybe with media manager, I should move all the files to a new location, but wondered if it would make duplicate files of the clips that are used in two different projects. Any hints would be really appreciated before I begin this process, and thank you for the helpful information that I used to buy a new G raid drive!

    sincerely,
    Jesus

How about using Carbon Copy Cloner to make a copy of the same directory structure?

When you’re done, you could even rename the new drive with the old drives name (after removing the old drive). Then all files will be in the same directory structure as they ever were.

That should be fine. Move everything and then un-hook the old drive before starting Final Cut.

If everything is moved together you should only have to re-connect one file for each project. Once Final Cut sees that file it should find everything else instantly. So for 7 projects you’d have to locate 7 files…one each time you open a project. Shouldn’t take too long.

And you’ve still got the old drive if something goes wrong. If that doesn’t work out, erase the new drive and try something different.

But I don’t think it will be a big deal.

hey this worked great! I just transfered all the files, renamed the drive the name of the old drive, and made the same folders, and everything connected perfectly. thanks for the info and ideas, and be careful with Lacie drives!
