  • Digitizing from Pal to FCP Problem

I’m using FCP 5.0.4 on a 17″ power Book and can’t get the DV-Pal setup to work. I am using a Sony HDV HVRM15U deck for play back. I can see the video on a seperate monitor, but the preveiw is disabled in the log and capture window. I tried hitting the capture now and I get an error that there isn’t any video present. I’ve also tried to digitze using FCP 5.1.1 on G5 Dual 2.0 and am having the same problem. Just to check the connection to the deck we put a NTSC DV tape in the deck and we can see and capture the video just fine. Any clues?

What is the HDV Deck set to? If it is like the cameras, you have to set the video rate and whether it is down converting. If you want to play a PAL DV tape then it should be set for 50i and the output set to DV. The fact that it worked for NTSC suggests that the deck is not set for PAL playback, rather than anything to do with FCP settings.

Jeff was borrowing my deck and the deck auto senses PAL / NTSC playback. It shows up as 50i during playback and I was able to get the footage to show up on one G5 in our shop only when I simply made a duplicate of the DV-PAL Easy Setup.

The only Menu option on downconverting is whether you want DV and what aspect ratio. There’s no NTSC / PAL switch or menu item as it’s an autodetect.

hey guys, I seem to have the same problem. Only Im using NTSC Footage. Im using a A DSR-11 Deck, and like you said The deck is controlable, but there is no preview in the log and capture window. It was hooked up to an external Moniter so I know the video is comming out. All of this was happaning on my Dual 1.8GHZ G5 running Final cut 5.4. I tryed to capture on IMovie to see if was the computer and that seems to be ok. I also tryed using my powerbook, and that seems to be ok. SO the only conclusion I can come to is Preferences? what do you think?

    Walter –

I’m having a similar problem with a Sony DSR11. I’m in an NTSC (60i) facility, with some PAL (50i) tapes. When capturing I have deck control, but don’t see a picture. The deck is self-selecting for PAL/NTSC playback. When I put an NTSC tape, everything works fine – whether I set Final Cut to capture PAL or NTSC, I still get a picture.

I duplicated the PAL easy setup, but no joy. Am I missing something basic (or at least basic to people who use PAL?)
