  • External HardDrive Issues: Anyone had this happen? Advice on a good drive?

My Lacie 500gb Big disk extreme external has been getting grumpy with me lately, and has a tendency to freeze for about 5 seconds when I am working in FCP. It also does it with raw QT files straight from the disk. I have had the drive for about 2 years, no problems, and someone told me they just die after a certain age. Anyone had this happen? Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem if it is fixable? I have 400 gb of media from one project, and losing it would mean days and days of recapture. Also, any recommendations on a good external system would be so so helpful to eliminate this problem in the future. Thanks!

G-Raid by G-Technology. Very solid drives. I had a small issue with mine that was resolved in 3 days. They have a 3 year warranty on all their products.

90% of the time when someone posts a drive issue it is with a Lacie drive…

400gb of media on a 500Gb drive is over 80% full being that the capacity of the drive is really only about 470gb, and you said that is just from one project. Do you have any other projects on that drive as well? Most drives tend to bog down as they approach their capacity so this is probably normal. On the other hand get a g-raid!
