  • Recommendation on Intel PowerMac

I know I’m behind the curve but — I have been waiting for the intel desktop Mac to hit the market before I replace my durable but antiquated G4 with a new model. (I use the setup with FCP primarily and for the producing of DVDs.) I now see from an Apple news update that the intel Power Mac is on the market. What is the opinion of those who see this e-mail – would one of those intel G5 models be preferrable to an non-intel G5 model at present? Would it be wise to wait until the potential bugs are gotten out of the intel model? If that is so, how long a wait would be required? Thanks for whatever advice you can offer.

First off, it’s the Mac Pro now.

Second, you should watch the WWDC presentation on the Apple website to learn more about the machine.

    What are your production needs?

I’ve ordered the Quad 3.0 with the ATI 1900 card for our shop. We’ll be taking our G5 Dual 2.0’s out of production by the fourth quarter and just running the current G5 Quad and the new Mac Pro Quad 3.0 by that time.

The machines are just arriving to customers so as to how they will work out, it will be a while. But if I’m going to spend the money, I’ll get the latest machine instead of the last of the old PowerMac line.

Walter will you run After Effects, Photoshop & FinalTouch HD using Rosetta or will you keep them on the Quad G5?

Final Touch should be Universal by the end of the year, so yes I plan to run it on the new machine. Yes I plan to run Photoshop and AE on the new machine. Photoshop won’t be a big deal. My only concern is AE.

I don’t want to get too far off-topic, but I wonder about the possibility of running After Effects in Windows on the new Macs. From everything I read, the Intel Macs run Windows applications at nearly Identical speeds to traditional Windows computers. Could it be that Adobe now has no incentive to keep developing a Mac version of After Effects? How does the performance of Mac and Windows versions compare?

That is a possibility, but then I have to purchase a brand new version of AE and all the plug-ins.

According to what Adobe said at the Mac World this past year, a Universal Version of After Effects and Photoshop will be released as part of the normal product production cycle. They’re not going to make any special update for the Mac. So After Effects 8 and Photoshop CS 3 would be the Universal versions for the Mac.

Thank you all for allowing me to lurk on your fascinating discussion of the cutting edge in FCP/Mac Pro.

I will buy a Mac Pro after waiting for feedback about bugs in these new machines. I will lurk further at the location in the hopes that I will hear about the tests results that have been talked about in this thread. I will get in line for all Universal software issued in the future that furthers editing needs. I will gratefully accept any further advice that you pundits and wizards have to offer.

    Thanks again for this thread.
