  Inserting Effects shots onto D5

  Hi,

  On Monday I need to insert some shots onto D5-HD into a master. I’ve only dealt with inputing footage from HDCam and have never even seen a D5 machine, must less used one.

  The client has provided me with the shots as quicktime files in H.264 codec. My feeling is that they will ultimately need to be in either Animation or 8 or 10 Bit 422 codecs. I have prepped a version of each in Shake.

  Can anyone tell me how to make sure I am dealing with the right bit depth when I do the inserts? Does it matter which codec I use when I insert into the tape?

  Also, I have read of people having frame accuracy problems on D5s with Final Cut. I’d really rather not blow away the client’s master so if anyone has any advice or warnings of things to watch out for, I’d really appreciate it.

  Hello again,

  Here’s some information about the system I will be using to transfer to D5 that I forgot to include in the previous post….

  Final Cut 5.0.4
  Kona 2 card with kbox
  Dual 2 GigHz Mac with 3 Gigs memory
  OS-x 10.4.7
  Quicktime 7.1.2 pro version
  Fibre Channel RAID with plenty of speed.

  I assume that I will be able to input normally via HD-SDI

  To insert into an HD show for broadcast? Ewwww. Can’t they send you the real footage?

  No…they will need to be prepped as 8-bit uncompressed HD or 10-bit Uncompressed HD. Same codec as the rest of the show.

  ooooooh. You’ve never even seen a D-5 machine and you’re gonna punch in to the master???? You’re just asking for trouble! Assuming that you can get it set up properly, with the correct reference signal, rs-422 control, and settings configurations, then….

  At the VERY LEAST get another piece of D-5 stock and do some tests for frame accuracy. Once you’re satisfied that you can achieve consistent results, only then should you try on the master.
