  • Outputting HD from sequence to Beta

Posted by John Timblemore on August 9, 2006 at 5:44 pm

I have a sequence that is composed of DVCProHD as well as HDV footage and I need to output it to Beta. The Beta deck is connected component via an AJA.
Everytime I try to Edit to Tape I get a compression settings error. I’ve nearly tried every combination of sequence presets and compressions – everything from DV to Video to component, etc. I’ve had no luck thus far. Is there a trick to it?

Which AJA product? Have you set it to downconvert to SD in the AJA Control Panel?

    AJA Io Version 1.1
    Does this make sense?
I’m at a studio i’m unfamiliar with and no one seems to know for sure.

The I/O doesn’t do HD. That is an SD only card. You need an HD card if you want it to work with HD footage.

Ok, but within the final cut I can work with HD.
Are you saying that even if I change the settings within FCP to DV compressor or something to that effect, that I still can’t work with HD?
Because I would assume, even if the AJA is SD, that it would allow me to throw it out to Beta.
If this isn’t possible can you suggest a workaround for me to get this footage on a beta?

Shane is saying that your card can’t do HD. If you change your sequence settings, or nest into an SD sequence, render all of that (which will obviously take time), you are no longer dealing with HD. Your sequence will then be SD, and you should be able to output it to your deck with your Io. Your setup can deal with your HD sequence… as soon as it isn’t HD anymore.

How do I nest HD clips into an SD sequence effectively…I’ve spent the last hour changing sequence settings. I’m not sure how to directly convert the clips to SD otherwise. Any and all assistance would be amazing.
I’m an editor that is used to working with SD and firewire.

Just to clarify a bit… What Zak is saying is: create an SD sequence (preferably 8-bit Uncompressed), drop your HD sequence into this one and render. It will take lots of time but it will work. The reason I say an 8-bit Uncompressed sequence is that HD downconverts much better on Uncompressed than any other that I have found.

BTW, if you are planning to do more of this… You might want to consider an AJA Kona product that will work with your computer.

    Shane,

Are you certain the Kona won’t downconvert on the fly? My Blackmagic card is SD only, but I can certainly output and/or display HD to SD on the fly.
