So I read the new towers have 1 drive standard and preconfigured slots for 3 more inside. The question is does anyone think it would be possible to put another 500 GB drive in the spare optical drive slot and use that as the boot drive and then you would be able to stipe the other 4 x 500Gb drives for a 2 TB raid and a 500gb system drive all inside the box?

I was wondering that myself seeing that I have 6 drives in my current machine. 3 in front of the FANS by the RAM and one in the space below the optical drive. But looking at the innards of the Mac Pro that area seems to be closed off, so I am unsure if it will work. I guess we need someone to buy one and look it over before we can know.

Doesn’t the optical drive slot have IDE connectors? IF so how are you going to add another SATA? With another card? can you snake the cable up thru to it? Would you void the warranty? Probably… I’m guessing of course, but that’s my take on it… you’d be better off booting from a FW drive and striping the 4 that it can contain if what I surmise is correct.

That was my thinking as well.

    Jerry,

If it is just the boot drive no need for another Sata the IDE connector should be fine.

I just this method currently for booting off my G4 which has five drives in it.

Four striped as a raid, one boot drive in the 2nd optical slot.

[Jerry Hofmann] “Doesn’t the optical drive slot have IDE connectors?”

Actually I just spoke to the apple sales tech and he said that the slot has Parallel ATA connections and another hard drive could be used in that slot. The only thing is it may require a different mounting bracket. Woooohoooo 2 TB internal raid on slide out sleds.

Couldn’t find a layman’s answer on Google, so:

Does anyone know the read/write performance of a four-drive RAID 5 setup?
