need help with LaCie hard drive
I have a 500G LaCie external drive. I had it sitting upright and it fell over. Now it will not mount and in disk utility, although it sees the drive, it says there are 0bytes available on the drive. A friend told me it sounds like the stylus is catching (it makes this weird clicking sound)….but that is Greek to me. Please help!!! LaCie has offered to send me a replacement but I need to retrieve my files because I did not have them backed up. Please somebody help me. There is no forum for hard drives but I was hopeing that someone on here uses external drives and could help me. Thank you!

To be honest, I don’t think you’re getting your data back. Unfortunately, the drive is hosed and fixing it is not an option. If the data is critical and cost is not a factor, then contact a company like Drive Savers and they will likely recover whatever you need (expensive): https://www.drivesavers.com/

You’re officially hosed. Get another drive and start recapturing. I’ve lost a FireWire drive this way too. It ain’t pretty, but in this case. You just gotta suck it up and accept the fact that FireWire drives are not the safest way to store media

If you’re going to drop your drive on the floor from your desk, especially while its turned on, it makes little difference if its a firewire drive or any other type of drive.

Ditto to everyone here. Maybe LaCie can help to get your data back but dropping a drive while it’s running is usually a sure way to death for the unit.

Maybe you missed my point, I said that portable FireWire drives are not as safe as internal drives because you can’t drop them if they’re inside the tower’s case. If you are referring to the fact that there are external drives other than firewire drives, well, sure then. 😉
