    Cowpersons-

My little film got into two ‘fests and now I get to online it. Lucky for me, I have access to a DigiBeta for this purpose. Unlucky for me, it feeds a Media Composer. I am trying to suss out what I will need to have ready in order to facilitate this. There are several questions, so if you feel like taking a swing at even one of them I would be grateful. Important note- the post facility I will be using doesn’t have automatic duck, so I am doing this on a fundamental level.

My masters are anamorphic super 16mm telecines, clones of the DVCams (rather the DVCams are clones of the Digis) I used for the offline and there are two of them (it’s a short)

At this point I am working with the following process: Export an OMF for audio, an EDL for video, export uniques like Motion graphics, titles, credits, soundtracks and bring them along. I was thinking of bringing a copy of the timeline on my Powerbook so I have dissolve/ speed reference, and a DVCam offline master to compare to the AVID online.

    Questions:

    1. Assuming that the EDL I export can be brought into the Media Composer, what is the best export setting? CMX 3600?

    2. Is there a way to list the dissolves in FCP so I can have a reference for the AVID session?

    3. I have been told that AVID doesn’t like the QT Animation codec. What is the best way to bring graphics into AVID at the highest quality?

    4. (A big one I know) What is the best way to use Media Manager to blow away unused media in the offline suite? Is there a link somewhere? I’ve been using the Media Tool in AVId at work and I confess to being confused enough to mistrust what I think I know here. The FCP Manual is open, though, and I am reading…

Has anyone done this and are there common mistakes I should look out for? Is there a glaring, obvious step I am misisng?

I am extremely grateful for an assistnace you can offer me. This is our first film to go to festival and I am trying to be as dilligent as possible so we make the best impression.

    Thanks thanks thanks

I’d just rent an AJA Io for the day and merely output from FCP to DigiBeta. Way easier. Especially if you ain’t flyin’ with “The Duck”.

I second Kevin’s suggestion. Either that or find a place that offers FCP online services. Going from FCP to Avid can be messy, especially without Automatic Duck.
