HDV Export Current Settings DVD SP Error
Posted by Gempic on July 26, 2006 at 4:52 amHi All
I exported a HDV project from FCP 5 using current settings and DVD SP gives me a Incompaitable Format error.
Exporting this way saves best quality what can I do to get DVD SP to reconize it?
Cheers

July 26, 2006 at 5:00 amYou need to down convert it to SD to put it on a DVD. Creat a new Time Line (DV NTSC Anamorphic) and drag your HDV time line on to that, render it then export that, and then bring it into DVDSP

July 26, 2006 at 5:05 amNo that makes no sense you can burn a SD DVD when you export DVC Pro HD I’ve burned SD DVD’s in HDV formats when exported in quick time movie but it won’t burn when export in current settings.
Down converting to DV NTSC defeats the purpose of even shooting in HD format!

July 26, 2006 at 5:15 amFrom this experince if it’s reconized as HDV it won’t support it exported as HD or others it will burn SD DVD’s.
Even exported as HDV 1080 60i it wil burn, I think when exported in these formats it converts it to MPEG-2 files.
iDVD will except the footage but DVD SP won’t and I think iDVD converts to MPEG-2 files.
Confused

July 26, 2006 at 5:27 amUnless you have access to an HD DVD Burner i assume that you are making a regular SD DVD in wich case exporting as SD video is not going to make a difference in the quality of the final product.
Check the postings on the HDV Forum

July 26, 2006 at 5:44 amYour saying once DVD SP gets ahold of it, it’s going to make no difference because after it’s burned in SD it all will look the same.
But you can see the difference in the quality when you play the movies in quicktime. I just played one exported in DVC Pro HD and played the one I exported in Current settings, it’s pretty clear in the difference.
Current settings is way better. Look at my other posts current settings is off the time line exactly what you have been editing where the other forums go threw all kinds of convertions.
So if burning in SD reduces quality then the better quality product will look better then the lessor product.
I would think

July 26, 2006 at 5:48 amyes DVD SP will make it SD unless you specify that you are makiing a HD DVD in the disc settings
Most people will export using compressor befor going to DVD SP that way you have more control as to how it will come out.

July 26, 2006 at 5:51 amHere I am to save you ur day again. Do you have Compressor? I hope so… Take that export we did at current settings and use compressor to encode to MPEG-2 and AC3 audio. Then import those into DVDSP.

July 26, 2006 at 2:28 pmComputer monitors will always point out your compression artifacts. That’s beacuse computer monitors are much higher resolution than your broadcast monitors. Its the same for HD, too.
Always compare your video using broadcast monitors!
And when it comes to exporting to DV first… DVD is very similar to DV video so you’re not going to hurt your output becasue DVD video compressed even further than DV. I understand you want the highest quality but sometimes you have to sacrifice quality to get your finished product. Unless the graphics are severly compressed, I’m sure your client isn’t going to care.

August 17, 2006 at 2:26 amThe FCP manuals state that DVD SP should be able to read HDV files since its MPEG2 format is the same as what is used in DVDSP. Does your timeline need to be rendered as “Print to Video” renders it to convert from the Apple Intermediate Codec and back to pure HDV? (Though this render is lengthy time-wise it may create better looking pictures.)
