In all cases exporting as a quicktime movie using Curent Settings exports the native file format that your editing on the timeline. This preserves exactly what you started with, there is nothing better than that unless you have a specific reason for bumping to another format. A self contained movie is a file that can play on other machines, while a reference movie has to reference the files on your computer, so if you take it off your computer, or delete the files in your project, you’re sunk.
