  • General FireWire and DV Deck Question: Two CPUs to one Deck?

Posted by Dan Warvi on July 21, 2006 at 7:57 pm

    To All:

More of a line of speculation than an actual attempt….is there any way to hook TWO CPUs (laptop or desktop) to ONE DV Deck, using only FireWire?

Just for grabbing video – no machine control, timecode etc.

    Any ideas?

The only “safe” wqay to do this is with a FW Switch,
since having the deck connected to both computers at ONCE would likely create a FW conflict.

    https://www.signvideo.com/firewire-switch-ieee-1394.htm

That’s one of the most popular FW switches.

Laird makes an INTERVAL switcher for firewire.

    more info.
This is as close as you can get to a dv production mixer for around $1000.00. Kreamer out of Isrial makes a number of FW switchers too. Go do a search at Markertek for FW Switchers, they have great prices and a good selection.

This is not the kind of “switch” that’s needed to “share” a single FW device between two computers.
To the converse, It takes multiple FW sources and “routes” them to go one output.
It is an “active” circuit” that only allows a “one-way” operation of the FW sikgnal.

The OP needs to go the “other way”.
The PASSIVE A/B switch I posted allows this type of set-up (AND would allow the signals to pass BOTH ways between the source and the computer).

You’d hook one computer’s FW port to the “A” jack, the other computer’s FW port to the “B” jack and the FW Deck/Camcorder/Source to the “common” jack.

You’re right, I guess I was excited about it when I saw as it is more suited to my own needs. However the Kreamer units I referred to are just what he needs. They have a 6 channel model at Markertek, the VS-66FW that looks it. Here’s the link:
