We have recently acquired the Panasonic Varicam and are now looking to upgrade our 2 edit systems to G5 2.5 Ghz with 4GB SDRAM. My question is about storage. We have been using ATTO UL3D SCSI with 8 drives striped together for 1 TB of storage for each of our 2 systems, but the drives have been unstable when capturing HD through our Kona 2. Would we be better off going with Apple Xserve RAID? If so, what would we need to do to have both of our edit systems share one Xserve RAID? Would it be better to dedicate one Xserve for each system?

    Thanks!

The UL3D is for PCI. You should be using the UL4D for a PCI-X G5. OTOH, if you switch to fiber, you open up the possibilities of using shared storage for both edit bays. Would that alone be worth the switch? Setting up a shared storage network will be expensive, though.

You can capture DVCPro HD via firewire to a FW800 drive so I think the scsi raid will be plenty fast enough.

the xraid is an overprice piece of …

there are so many other options especially when you jump to fibre… but the other guy is right about the dvcpro HD… it’s only 7mb/s up to the 20’s mb/s on 1080 material… plenty for a Graid to handle, in fact I dig’d an entire movie offline to a coupld graid 500s. if you’re only dealing with the false HD world of dvcproHD you don’t need to spend rediculous cash with the xraid.
