    Hi all,
Up until now I’ve had my edit system (Mac running FCP) and my office & communications systems seperate (on a PC, Outlook for email…etc..) . I’m rethinking that and I think would like to put it ‘all under one roof’ in my G5 Mac. My question is what is the best way to go about this…what is the equivelent of Microsoft’s ‘Outlook’ on the Mac…and are there any pitfalls to look out for.
Thanks in advance to any advice/help.

ms office makes office 2004 for mac, which includes entourage, the mac equivelant of outlook…however, I am a fan of firefox, thunderbird, and sunbird, the browser/mail/calender programs from mozilla…macs also come with mail and ical built in, both I heard are quite good…

As mentioned Entourage is the Mac version of Outlook…. however I’ve never really been a fan.

I use Mail, which is Apple’s email software. Very simple, clean user interface. I never had any problems.

I’ve always just used Apple’s iCal, Mail, and Address Book. They work together in such a way that I kind of consider them a single program that’s just been split up into 3 icons on the dock.

I know a lot of people use the other programs that Ben suggested, so they’re probably find options too.

But I’ve always been perfectly happy with the programs that come on my Mac so I’ve never felt the need to try any of them myself.

I never recommend anyone use their editing system for anything but working.

I just use Apple’s own suite of software including Mail, iCal and Safari. I do this on my Powerbook. Use a MacMini or a laptop for all your mail / internet needs. Leave your editing system alone.

It amazes me how many people have all kinds of crashes and “issues” with FCP turn out to be the same people who use their machines to do everything from play games to surf the internet. The more you do on your editing machine, the better your chance of running into conflicts and issues that will affect Final Cut Pro.

    Walter,

Normally I would agree with you but after three years of exhaustive testing using FCP and firefox and now mail I have never had any issues or downtown due to a nasty virus sneaking onto my G4.

I wish I could say the same for my windoze XP machine which sucks, sucks and sucks some more. After two complete reformatting of the hard drives due to a virus infecting the machine I have given up on XP and decided to switch the business operations to a dedicated Mac.

In anycase for those who want a rock solid no frills system then Walters method does offer the ultimate security.

I agree with Walter. The only exception being I do have my editing machine hooked via ethernet to a dsl router. Getting software updates, downloading plug-ins and the like are easier when they go right to the machine they’ll be used on.

I use Apple’s Mail program for email, but I run it on a powerbook. Some people got really turned off with Mail when they tried version 1. It was a buggy disgrace. Newer versions are very stable however, and I haven’t had any problems with them. The Junk mail learning feature rocks!

    David
